Due to its geographical location, Australia is often called as the
land "down under" because of the continental drift that took place
millions of years ago. Australia, is one of the most well developed
country, making it's name in the world economy. Australian culture is a
combination of different traditions, mixed by western influences and by
the tradition brought by the early settlers known as the aborigines.
These people inhabited Australia 60,000 years ago, living like a hunter
gatherer they are at peace until the Europeans dominated the country in
1788 and alter their ways of living.
Today, immigrants all over the world are trying to take their place in
the society. Starting with them, the Australian culture has grown and
became one of the most diverse culture in the the whole world.
Australia's cultural practices and pursuits bring its name on the top.
Australia earned an international status as one of the most livable
country with the residents of more than 200 countries. Because of its
democratic principles, people in Australia have the rights to practice
their own culture and beliefs. Australian people used English as their
official language as it is the most convenient language for the tourist.
Religion is not an issue for most Australians, because their own
religion and beliefs are well respected.
Because of the changing time, Australian culture became more
Americanised when it comes to food, clothing, music, activities and
lifestyle. Australians have no official clothing, but their fashion and
local designs has been featured internationally. They have their own
Australian Fashion Week to showcase the creativity of Australian
designers. Australian music spotlighted the use of didgeridoo a wooden
instrument that creates a droning sound, it was originally played by the
aborigines. Today, some internationally renowned artist like the Bee
Gees, Paul Kelly and Kylie Minogue brought the influence of modern music
to the Australian community.
Most Australian's are sports minded, rugby, golf, soccer, football,
cricket and horse racing are among the many sports they loved. In fact,
the world's most famous horse race is held in Australia every first
Tuesday of September. It is known as the
Melbourne Cup, this prestigious event has been part of Australian
culture since it's first race in 1861. Another famous event in Australia
is the Australian Open Tennis,
where people all over the world gathered to witness this spectacular
tournament that showcases the ability of the players to compete.
Australian's are known for their strong character and personality, their
beliefs and tradition helps them to unite as one. Their success starts
among themselves and through the support of many, the success of one
person is the success of all. One important event that best describes
unity among Australians is the
Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race,
this particular event showcases teamwork among the participants.
